

Helena’s wide eyed look that she wears the entire play and her meek demeanor adds to the semblance of her innocence that is seen throughout the play.
One of the big questions in Hamlet is whether Ophelia has been intimate with Hamlet. In this production it seems apparent that Helena has not been around Hamlet very often since she cowers away from him in almost every scene. When he enters her home through the window she does everything in her power to stay on the opposite side of the room from him.The sweet and innocent Ophelia that we see in this production adds to the dramatic effect when she turns mad.
Below is a scene from the movie in which Polonius uses Ophelia as bait to spy on Hamlet. Helena's Ophelia cowers in fear at this "powerful" Hamlet and she spends most of the scene turning away from Hamlet or hiding behind her book from him. The coupling of a powerful Hamlet and an innocent Ophelia makes Hamlet seem almost monstrous in this scene.
