Mariah Gale portrays the ideal rebellious Ophelia in Gregory Doran's interpretation of Hamlet. During Act 1 scene 3, where Leartes is saying goodbye to Ophelia, Gale rolls her eyes behind her brothers back as he tells her to stay away from Hamlet. Ophelia argues with her father while he lectures her on Hamlet and during Act 3 scene 1, Ophelia wears an appalled look on her face as her father tells her to spy on Hamlet. Even with Hamlet, Ophelia is stern, during Act 3 scene 2 she is firm with the young prince who makes jokes about her.

Reviews
“And I can scarcely remember a better Ophelia than that of Mariah Gale, whose mad-scenes carry a potent sense of danger, and whose skin is as badly scarred by the flowers she has gathered, as her divided mind is by emotional turmoil.”

"And while Mariah Gale’s Ophelia is intelligently played, her sung madness is too self-conscious to be moving. All this, however, is a small price to pay for the production’s lucidity and dramatic cogency."
