Frances Barber states that during rehersal for  Act 1 scene 3, "[Polonius] and I played the scene avoiding eye-contact until the final order forbidding her ever to see Hamlet again," Opehlia's next line was "I shall obey, my Lord," but Barber states that she, "had physically rounded on Polonius in such a way that to deliver the line in any way other than defiantly became impossible" (Barber 141). Barber described this scene as "an exasperated father trying to tame his wild daughter" (Barber 141). Barber does not only stand up to her father, but to Hamlet as well. During Act 3 scene 1, Barber states that she emphasises the way she addresses Hamlet with "only the slightest hint of indignation (Barber 143).
